Horse Show Happenings

Seven horses were loaded on the van for the first show of the season, the Dixie Cup, held at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers. They brought home five championships, one reserve championship and seven blue ribbons.

Two nights before the show started, Mike, Dwayne, Tony and Allyson escaped to dine at Craft, Tom Colochio's New American restaurant in Buckhead. Saturday night, in celebration of the running of the Kentucky Derby, several members of the Broadmoor Gang hosted an Italian dinner and invited family and friends to join them.

Disco Fever, owned by Cindy Nord, and Josette Conti slid into top honors in the Novice Horse division at an NRHA Show.

At the SERHA Spring Celebration in Williamston, NC, Cindy Nord’s seven-year-old gelding, Disco Fever, placed fourth in a large NRHA Novice Horse class with trainer Josette Conti in the saddle. So far, ‘Riley’ and Josie have won three Grand National and one Morgan World Championship titles in their show career. Now, they are helping to continue to keep Morgan reiners in the spotlight in open competitions.

New Arrivals

Sarah Ruby, equine manager at Bill Haines’ Ledyard Farm in Kings Ferry, NY, reported that they had eight foals (five fillies and three colts) born earlier this year. Anna Nicole, Queen’s Earth Angel and Wintop’s Princess Vanity had foals by Astronomicallee. CBMF Can’t Touch Me had a colt by Stand And Deliver.

News from the Broadmoor Gang

Once a grandmother, always a grandmother -- at the Dixie Cup Show, Kathy Gutting didn’t have any of her own grandchildren to share her love of her Morgan horses with, so she borrowed show photographer Casey McBride’s six-year-old daughter, Hannah. After each of Kathy’s classes on Frank, she let Hannah ride him. After Frank’s last class, Hannah got to ride Frank for a longer time. She also got a kick out of wearing Dwayne’s western spurs, especially the unique noise they made when she walked around the show grounds in them.

One of our former interns, Kelly Nadler, is working full-time at Lenux Stables in Huntersville, NC. She has been working there since she graduated from William Woods College in May 2008, and she loves it! The farm has several Saddlebred show horses and about 10 academy lesson horses. She trains several horses in the mornings, and gives riding lessons in the evenings (about 50 lessons a week). The farm has a website, www.lenuxstables.com. Kelly does miss the Broadmoor Gang and horses.

At the recent Copper Beach Sale at Sebring Stables in Richmond, MA, Dwayne drove Ann Hailey’s Miyake through the sale. The reigning World Futurity Three-Year-Old Pleasure Driving Champion topped the sale with the highest bid. He was purchased by Paulene Dube of Augusta, ME. She will drive ‘Izzy’ under the direction of David Rand.

At the sale, Bill Haines of Ledyard Farm purchased Stonecroft Love Story (Stonecroft Masquerade x Century Enjolie). The nine-year-old mare sold with a colt by Street Talk by her side and is back in foal to this stallion.
